Kay McKeen founded SCARCE in 1990 and is a noted speaker and trailblazer in educating schools and consumers on what it means to be environmentally responsible. The mission of SCARCE is "To inspire people, through education, to preserve & care for our Earth’s natural resources, while working to build sustainable communities". Kay has been recognized for the effectiveness of the programs SCARCE has developed and the legislation she has co-written to foster sustainability state-wide. Her dedication to improve the sustainability of our communities has earned her numerous awards over the years, including one of Suburban Life Magazine’s 2015 Women of Distinction and the 2016 Illinois Recycler of the Year. Most recently, Kay was awarded the 2017 Nonprofit Executive of the Year, by the West Suburban Philanthropic Network.
